Monday: Forgiveness and Consequences: Navigating Sin's Aftermath

Daily Devotional for week of July 27, 2025

Day 1: Overcoming the Giant of Personal Habits

BIG IDEA for the week: Even after you slay a giant in your life there will be another one waiting for you.

Passage:  2 Samuel 21:15-17

"There was war again between the Philistines and Israel, and David went down together with his servants, and they fought against the Philistines. And David grew weary. And Ishbi-benob, one of the descendants of the giants, whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of bronze, and who was armed with a new sword, thought to kill David. But Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to his aid and attacked the Philistine and killed him."

New Testament Passage: 2 Corinthians 12:9

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

Devotional:  David was out of gas. He was a sitting duck in battle. But God came through in David’s weakness through Abishai, his nephew and one of his mighty men. Consider the personal habits you’ve developed over time that you feel like you CAN’T overcome in your own power. Remember, like David, slaying one giant doesn’t mean there won’t be others. God calls us to remain vigilant and dependent on Him.  If we rely on our own strength or our own personal will-power to overcome the giants of our personal habits, we’ll likely give up or burn out.  If we know WHY we want to make the change, it will help us develop perseverance and rely on God to make the necessary changes.

Reflection:  Consider the progress you’ve made in your personal growth. What are your current prayer requests regarding personal disciplines or habits? Think about a recent victory and how God played a role in it. Reflect on how sustainable changes require ongoing commitment and reliance on God's strength, remembering that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.
