Monday: What Is Your Faith Actually Built On

Reading: Jeremiah 17:5  “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord.”

Devotional: Joash’s story forces an uncomfortable question: What is my faith actually built on? For years, Joash looked solid. He grew up in the temple, was mentored by a godly priest, helped restore God’s house, and led the nation toward worship. From the outside, his life screamed “faithful.” But the moment Jehoiada died, Joash collapsed spiritually. His actions revealed that his faith wasn’t rooted in God Himself, but in a person and a season.

We can be the same. We feel passionate about God as long as the right pastor is preaching, the right friends are attending, the right vibes are in the room, the right music is playing, or life is going relatively well. But if you remove those supports, what’s left? That’s where your true faith is. God is inviting you to examine whether you’ve attached your walk with Him to people, places, or moods rather than to Him alone.

Reflection: If your spiritual life rises and falls with other people’s faith, you may be building on sand. Healthy Christians bless us, leaders equip us, and the church encourages us—but none of them can be the foundation. The moment someone moves, fails, annoys you, or gets taken out of your life, anything built on them will start to shake. Joash’s faith looked strong as long as Jehoiada was alive. But when his mentor was gone, so was his obedience. That is a warning, not just a history lesson.

God wants to shift you from second-hand faith to first-hand faith. That means you know Him personally, not just through what others say or do. It means your walk with Him continues when the lights are off, the stage is empty, the group has disbanded, and no one is watching. True faith isn’t proven when everything is going well. It’s exposed when everything changes. Let God use this story to move you from a borrowed faith to a rooted, personal one.

Response: Take 10 honest minutes with God. Write down on a piece of paper: “My faith feels strongest when…” and “My faith feels weakest when…”. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you where you’ve attached your faith to people, leaders, environments, or emotions. Confess that to God and ask Him to be the true foundation of your faith.
