Saturday: Escaping the CRUMBL Cycle

Reading: “For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him…”— Romans 1:21 (ESV)
Devotional: It is easier to know about God than to live surrendered to God.
Easier to know what He says than to obey it
Easier to do our own thing than follow His plan
Easier to be ungrateful and moody than to give thanks
Easier to let our minds wander into fear and anxiety
Easier to slip into cynicism and idolize people, success, and stuff
That “easy way” is what we’re calling the CRUMBL CYCLE. Paul describes it in Romans 1, and Israel lived it out in 2 Kings:
Knowing but not obeying – They knew God but did not honor Him.
Doing their own thing – They tolerated and celebrated idols.
Being ungrateful – They stopped giving thanks and became entitled.
Mind wandering – Their thinking became futile and self-made.
Skepticism and cynicism – Their hearts were darkened; they resisted God’s rule.
Pride of intellect – Claiming to be wise, they became fools.
Idolizing people and stuff – They exchanged the Creator for created things.
The result? God “gave them up” to their choices—along with the consequences: unrest, division, anxiety, and ultimately separation from Him. But even in that, God shows mercy. Jehoahaz, a wicked king of Israel, led the nation deep into idolatry. Yet:
“Then Jehoahaz sought the favor of the Lord, and the Lord listened to him…”— 2 Kings 13:4 (ESV)
He didn’t deserve it, but God helped anyway.
Truth: God’s mercy is based on His faithfulness, not ours.He has not destined us for wrath, but for salvation through Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:9).
Even in a spiritually crumbling nation, God raised a dead man to life when he touched Elisha’s bones (2 Kings 13:21). That miracle shouts a message: God can still bring dead things to life—your spiritual passion, a broken relationship, a hope that feels gone, a mind stuck in anxiety or addiction.
BIG IDEA:THE CRUMBL CYCLE destroys everything in its path.A change of heart is the only solution.
Not just new behaviors—a new heart. That’s what Jesus offers.
Reflection: Where do you see the CRUMBL CYCLE in your life right now?
Knowing but not obeying?
Doing your own thing?
Ingratitude?
A wandering, anxious mind?
Cynicism, pride, or hidden idols?
Where do you need God to bring “dry bones” back to life?
Response: Choose one area of the CRUMBL CYCLE you struggle with most.
Confess it to God.
Then deliberately choose the opposite response at least three times today(gratitude instead of complaint, trust instead of anxious spiraling, obedience instead of delay).
Ask God not just to change your actions—but to change your heart.
