Saturday: Forgiveness and Consequences: Navigating Sin's Aftermath

Week 9: Living and Dying in Peace

BIG IDEA:  We can’t control much in this life. But we can control whether we are right with the KING OF KINGS.

Scripture: Philippians 1:20-21

“As it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain."

2 Samuel 19:34-37

"But Barzillai said to the king, 'How many more years will I live, that I should go up to Jerusalem with the king? Why should the king repay me in this way? Let your servant Chimham, go across with my lord the king. Do for him whatever you wish.'"

Barzillai…..what a cool dude and a great example to all of us. He’s seen it all. He’s experienced it all. And now he knows what really matters. There is certainly alot we can learn from a wise old man like Barzillai. His contentment with his simple life, declining the king's offer for honor, reflects a peace rooted in his identity and purpose. Paul’s declaration in Philippians reveals that true peace and purpose stem from a life centered on Christ. This perspective transforms how we approach life and death, viewing each as part of a greater divine narrative.

Understanding that our lives are led by Christ and our identity in Christ is settled provides perspective that transcends circumstances. We don’t have to chase all the other things that the world chases, because we have a living and an eternal hope found in Jesus!!  Like Barzillai, living with a heart aligned to God’s will leads to peace that isn’t shaken by worldly offerings or threats. Examine what truly anchors your peace and seek Christ’s presence in both life’s blessings and trials.  Contrast that with everything that the world is chasing after.  Now thank God that you don’t have to live a “rat race” of chasing after all the things that really just don’t matter in eternity.  And, if needed, recommit your life to living for a greater eternal purpose instead of all the other temporary stuff.

Prayer prompt: Lord, thank You for the peace that only You can provide. Help me to live faithfully and prepare my heart for eternity with You. Amen.
