Saturday: From Borrowed Faith to Enduring Faith

Reading: Hebrews 12:1-2 “…let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith…”
Devotional: Joash’s life started like a miracle story: saved as a baby from a murderous queen, hidden in God’s house, crowned king at seven, guided by a godly priest, leading a people back toward worship. But his life does not end like a miracle story. It ends with compromise, idolatry, murder, defeat, and assassination. Why? Because his faith was never anchored in God alone. It was anchored in a person, in a season, and in the benefits of following God when it was convenient.
You and I are invited to a different ending. Jesus is described as the “founder and perfecter” of our faith. That means He starts it and He finishes it. People come and go. Circumstances rise and fall. Ministries begin and end. But Jesus doesn’t change. Enduring faith is not about you being strong enough; it’s about you continually looking to the One who is strong enough. When mentors fail, when churches disappoint you, when life blindsides you, your faith can still stand if its eyes are locked on Him.
Hebrews 12 pictures the Christian life as a race that requires endurance. That implies struggle, tiredness, and opposition. But it also reminds us that we’re not the first to run. We are “surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses”—men and women who, unlike Joash, finished well by trusting God to the end. They laid aside every weight and sin because they were focused on Someone greater: Jesus, who endured the cross and is now seated at the right hand of God.
Reflection: The question as you end this six-day journey is simple and searching: Is my faith really my faith? Is it based on social approval, comfortable circumstances, and the presence of certain leaders? Or is it based on knowing, loving, and trusting God Himself? True faith says, “Even if all of that shifts, I will still look to Jesus. He began this work in me, and I trust Him to finish it.” Let that be your prayer and your posture going forward.
Response: Take 15 minutes to “reset” your focus on Jesus. Read Hebrews 12:1–3 slowly. For each phrase (“lay aside every weight,” “run with endurance,” “looking to Jesus,” “endured the cross”), pause and respond in prayer. End by verbally committing: “Jesus, You are the founder and perfecter of my faith. I choose You as my foundation above people and circumstances.”
