Saturday: Laying Down Pride, Taking Up Surrender

Reading: Matthew 16:24–26 (ESV)“24 Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?’”

1 Peter 5:5–7 (ESV)“5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”

Devotional: The stories of Amaziah, Uzziah, and the kings of Israel all press the same question: What are you trying to hold onto that God is asking you to lay down? They grasped for power, position, and recognition—and lost everything that mattered. Jesus turns that logic upside down: the way to truly live is to die to self, to lay down our rights, our insistence on control, and our demand to be seen. Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less and placing God back at the center. Peter tells us to “clothe” ourselves with humility, to intentionally put it on, because God actively opposes the proud but pours out grace on the humble. The very things we’re afraid to lose—status, security, significance—are safest when surrendered into God’s hands. When we lay down our pride, we make room for His peace, His guidance, and His timing.

Reflection: Where have you been trying to “gain the world” at the risk of your soul—your integrity, your intimacy with God, your obedience? Today is an invitation not just to avoid the crumble cycle, but to step into a life of surrendered freedom, casting your cares on the God who truly cares for you.

Response: In prayer, hold your hands out, palms up. Name aloud 2–3 specific areas of control or recognition you’re clinging to (career, reputation, ministry, finances, relationships). As you name each one, physically turn your palms downward as a sign of surrender, asking God to have His way in that area.
