Tuesday: Forgiveness and Consequences: Navigating Sin's Aftermath

Week 4: Overcoming Bitterness with Forgiveness

Reading: Ephesians 4:31-32, Colossians 3:12-14

Devotional: David's reluctance to fully reconcile with Absalom reminds us of the dangers of harboring bitterness. We have all had times in our lives when we have wanted to withhold forgiveness for people because we don’t deserve it.  But when we are truly honest with ourselves, we can remember that God forgave us when we also did not deserve forgiveness.  Today's passages call us to a higher standard - putting off bitterness and embracing forgiveness.

Reflect on any relationships where you might be holding onto resentment. How might your life change if you chose to forgive as Christ forgave you?

Let go of the unforgiveness.  Remember, forgiveness is not about forgetting or excusing wrongdoing, but about releasing the burden of bitterness.

Ask God to soften your heart and give you the strength to forgive, even when it's difficult.

Prayer:  Lord, I thank you so much that you never withhold forgiveness from me. Even though I have never earned your forgiveness, and even though I do not deserve your forgiveness, you grant it to me through the blood of Jesus Christ.  I pray that you will help me to release the burden of unforgiveness in my life by that same blood of Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit.  In Jesus name, amen.
