Week 4: The Power of Presence
Reading: Romans 12:9-21
Devotional: David's physical and emotional distance from Absalom contributed to the breakdown of their relationship. In contrast, today's reading emphasizes the importance of genuine love and being present with others, even in difficult circumstances. Sometimes we are called to show grace and be patient. Other times God calls us to deal with conflict head-on. It can be a challenge to discern the perfect action at the perfect time when it comes to trying to mend relationships. The good news is that we are all imperfect and there is ultimately never the perfect time, perfect way, or perfect situation to seek to build unity. Life is messy. We don’t have to be perfect, but we need to be loving and real. And this will allow us to do our part to live peaceably.
Consider how you can be more intentionally present with your loved ones. Are there relationships that need your time and attention?
Be like Jesus, not like David. Instead of allowing more distance to make situations worse, prayerfully make the best effort that you can make to make things right, even if it makes you uncomfortable or vulnerable.
Reflect on verse 18: "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." What practical steps can you take today to foster peace in your relationships?
Pray for opportunities to show Christ's love in seeking forgiveness, unity, and reconciliation.
Prayer: God, thank you for not distancing yourself from me when I’ve failed. I am so grateful that you are always there and that you are always the same. Even when I am unfaithful, you are faithful. Help me to be more like you; to be faithful to others when it comes making things right.
