FRIDAY: Returning to First Works

Reading:
Revelation 2:5
“Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.”
Jeremiah 2:1-3
“The word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the Lord, “I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown. Israel was holy to the Lord, the firstfruits of his harvest. All who ate of it incurred guilt; disaster came upon them, declares the Lord.”
Mark 1:35-39
“And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.” And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.”
Devotional:
Jesus doesn't call us to discover new spiritual practices but to return to foundational ones. What did you do when your love for Christ burned bright? Perhaps you rose early for prayer, devoured Scripture hungrily, worshiped with abandon, shared your faith naturally, or served joyfully.
These "first works" weren't burdensome—they flowed from love. Spiritual renewal often comes through simple obedience: opening your Bible daily, kneeling in prayer, gathering with believers, sharing the Gospel. Don't wait to feel passionate before acting; often passion returns through obedience. Jesus modeled this—rising early to pray, prioritizing time with the Father despite demands.

Today, identify one "first work" you've abandoned.
Response:
Commit to resuming it this week—not from guilt but from desire to return to your first love. Let simple faithfulness reignite your affection for Christ.
