THURSDAY: Called to Be Salt and Light

Reading:

Matthew 5:13-16

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Devotional:

Jesus calls His followers to be salt and light—preservatives and illuminators in a decaying, dark world. The early American Christians understood this calling. They didn't separate their faith from public life; they brought biblical principles into government, education, and society.

Today, many Christians have withdrawn from the public square, allowing darkness to advance unopposed. But moral issues—life, sexuality, truth, freedom—aren't political; they're biblical. You are called to let your light shine. This doesn't mean being harsh or unloving, but it does mean standing boldly for truth.

Where has your light grown dim? In your workplace? Your neighborhood? Your child's school?

Response:

Ask God for one specific way to be salt and light this week. Then act on it with grace and courage.
