Friday: The Tragedy of a Divided Heart

Key Idea: Doing the right things for the wrong reasons eventually shows up in your worship.
Reading: 2 Kings 10:29–31 “But Jehu did not turn aside from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin—that is, the golden calves that were in Bethel and in Dan. And the Lord said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in my eyes, and have done to the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart, your sons of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.” But Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn from the sins of Jeroboam, which he made Israel to sin.”
Devotional Thought: Even after all Jehu did against Ahab and Baal, Scripture gives a sobering verdict: “But Jehu did not turn aside from the sins of Jeroboam… the golden calves that were in Bethel and in Dan.” God tells Jehu He has done well in carrying out His judgment against Ahab and promises that four generations of his sons will sit on Israel’s throne. But then comes the critical line: “Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart.” He destroyed one form of idolatry but kept another. He helped clean up Israel’s worship, yet he never fully surrendered his own.
The golden calves represented a twisted, convenient form of worship—using “God” language but turning to man-made images and earthly prosperity. Jeroboam had set them up so people wouldn’t have to go to Jerusalem; Jehu kept them. This tells us that Jehu’s obedience had limits. He would go as far as it fit his own plans, politics, and comfort. His motives were not purely centered on God’s glory; they were mixed with self-interest and control. That’s the danger for us, too: to follow God up to the point where His will doesn’t clash with our idols.
Reflection Questions:
Where might you be obeying God in some areas while protecting idols in others?
Is there any habit, relationship, or dream you’re unwilling to surrender if God asks?
Prayer: God, I don’t want a divided heart. Show me the “golden calves” I’ve allowed to remain—places where I trust in created things instead of in You. Make me careful to walk in Your ways with all my heart. Amen.
