Monday: God is with us in the "I can't evens."

Scripture: 1 Kings 19:3

"Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there."

Elijah, despite being a powerful prophet who had just witnessed God's tremendous power, found himself overcome by fear and fled for his life. This moment captures the essence of being overwhelmed by circumstances—a universal experience known as the "I can't evens." It demonstrates that no one is immune to fear and feelings of insufficiency, even after witnessing great victories and miracles.

In this passage, Elijah’s fear reminds us of our humanity and our inclination to respond to threats with panic. I don’t know about you….but sometimes the “I can’t evens” make me want to run and hide, or just bury myself under the covers in my bed. His flight to Beersheba represents the natural instinct to escape when things don’t go as planned. The "I can't evens" can drive us to isolate ourselves, just as Elijah left his servant behind. It is a call to recognize our need for God amidst our earthly vulnerabilities and recognize His unwavering presence with us.

Trust God in the I can't evens:

Jesus faced the ultimate trial in Gethsemane, overwhelmed to the point of sweating blood. Was there pain? Yes. Was their struggle? Yes. But God’s ultimate good came out of this. And for those who love God, ALL THINGS work together for good. Regardless of Jesus’ level of “I can’t even”, He trusted God's plan. The Holy Spirit, our Comforter, strengthens us during daunting trials, reminding us that God’s presence is with us, imparting peace and courage amid fear.

ACTION STEP: Identify a moment where you are tempted to "run for your life" or escape. Take a moment to pause, breathe, and invite God into that situation, asking for His peace to replace your fear.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for your grace and presence in my fear. I know that fear is a very real part of being human. But I also know that when I am afraid, I can put my trust in you.  Help me to focus on You, rather than to focus on my fear.
