BIG IDEA: When it comes to giving our treasures, we should start with “In the Beginning, God.”
Scripture: Matthew 6:19-21 ““Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
In Matthew 6:21, Jesus highlights the deep connection between our hearts and our finances. It’s a profound reminder that the allocation of our resources is a reflection of our true priorities. When we put God first in our finances, it is not merely about fulfilling a legalistic obligation; it is about setting our hearts in the right place. Just like the first words of the Bible, “In the beginning, God,” our giving should begin with God as the foundation. Giving God our first and our best trains us to prioritize Him in every aspect of our lives, recognizing that without Him, none of our treasures would exist.
On this first day, reflect on what you prioritize with your earnings. The truth is, it doesn’t require faith to give what is left after spending. It takes faith to give first. This is the exercise God calls us to—a daily decision to trust that He is our provider and source. As we practice giving our best, we align our hearts with His purposes, ready to receive blessings He has in store.
Action Step: Instead of giving what’s left, give first. Set aside the first portion of your income this week as an offering to God. Take a moment to pray, dedicating this act with a heart full of gratitude and faith.
