Scripture: 1 Kings 22:5-6 (ESV) - "And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, 'Inquire first for the word of the Lord.' Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred men, and said to them, 'Shall I go to battle against Ramoth-gilead, or shall I refrain?' And they said, 'Go up, for the Lord will give it into the hand of the king.'"
Proverbs 16:18 (ESV) - "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall."
In 1 Kings 22, King Ahab seeks affirmation from a group of prophets who were more aligned with his desires than with God's truth. Their unanimous agreement did not come from divine insight but from a desire to please the king. This highlights the beginning of pride—ignoring true wisdom in favor of self-serving advice. In today’s world, this can be seen when we surround ourselves with voices that echo our beliefs, avoiding those that challenge us to grow deeper in faith and truth.
The proverb from the Old Testament reminds us that pride sets us on a path towards our downfall. Listening to what we want to hear can be comforting but is ultimately deceitful and dangerous. Our society often promotes self-importance and self-reliance. Left unchecked, pride can lead to significant personal and spiritual consequences.
Jesus offers hope in our struggle by providing a model of humility and truth-seeking. He invites us to lay down our pride and seek God's wisdom. Through His example, we learn the importance of surrendering our desires for divine truth.
Action Step:
Identify an area in your life where you've sought only favorable opinions. Seek out someone you trust and respect, even if they may challenge you, and ask for their perspective on the matter.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to seek your truth above anyone else’s. Forgive me for times that I’ve sought the world’s approval above Your approval. And help me to live in a way that is passionate about serving and pleasing You first.
