Monday: The Danger of Tolerance

BIG IDEA for the week:  Godly wisdom leads us to repentance instead of tolerance

Scripture: 1 Kings 8:57-58 (ESV)

"The Lord our God be with us, as He was with our fathers. May He not leave us or forsake us, that he may incline our hearts to Him, to walk in all His ways and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His rules, which He commanded our fathers."

In today's passage, Solomon speaks words of dedication and calls upon God to remain close to His people. By emphasizing a call to walk in His ways and keep His commandments, Solomon is underscoring the importance of not allowing compromise in their devotion to God. The notion of tolerance, when applied to spiritual matters, becomes dangerous when it means compromising God’s directives. As we reflect on this, it's crucial to recognize that while patience and kindness are virtues, spiritual tolerance should not become an avenue for condoning sin.

The message is clear: God desires our full devotion and seeks to incline our hearts toward His statutes. Spiritual compromise begins quietly, often with small concessions. It mirrors Solomon’s eventual path, where tolerating small sins led to broader disobedience. Today, consider the areas in your life where tolerance has allowed sin to take root.

Action Step: Identify and write down one area in your life where you have become tolerant of sin. Pray for God’s strength to repent and turn fully to Him.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, help me to discern the areas where I have tolerated sin. Lead me back to the path of righteousness, and let my heart be wholly true to Your ways. I pray for Your wisdom to guide me in turning away from even the smallest compromises in my life. Amen.
