Monday: When Motives Matter More Than Actions

Key Idea: Serving God is always good—but why you serve Him matters just as much as what you do.

Reading: 1 Samuel 16:7 “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.””

Psalm 139:23-24 “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!”

Devotional Thought: You can do all the “right” religious activities—church attendance, serving, giving, reading your Bible—and still miss God’s heart if your motives are off. Motives quietly shape the outcome of everything you do. If you study just to pass a test, you’ll likely forget the material. If you join a team only because your friends are there, you probably won’t grow in skill. If you help your spouse only to get them “off your back,” you won’t deepen the relationship. In the same way, if you try to get close to God simply so He’ll give you success, popularity, or comfort, you’ll never truly know Him. God cares about why you walk with Him, not just that you walk with Him.

1 Samuel 16:7 reminds us that humans focus on outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. God had sent Samuel to anoint a king, and even Samuel was impressed by outward stature and strength. But God cut through all of that: “Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” Psalm 139 adds another layer, as David prays, “Search me and know my heart.”  David’s desire of a heart that is not split between God and other loves, other motives, other gods. God is inviting you into a life where your inner world—your desires, reasons, and motives—is aligned with His truth.

Reflection Questions:

  • In what areas of your life do you tend to care more about image than integrity?

  • Is there something you’re doing “for God” that you’re actually doing to get something from God?

Prayer: Lord, You see past my actions and into my heart. Expose any false motives in me. Teach me Your way, that I may walk in Your truth. Unite my heart to fear Your name and to serve You out of love and gratitude, not selfish ambition. Amen.
