Saturday: Choosing God’s Way Today

Reading: Deuteronomy 30:15-20 ““See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you today, by loving the Lord your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you today, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.””

Joshua 24:14–15  “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.  And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Devotional: Across these stories—of the Shunammite woman, of Hazael, of Jehoshaphat’s family, of Israel and Judah—we see the same thread: God gives people real choices, and those choices carry real consequences.  The Shunammite woman chose faith and obedience and experienced God’s provision and restoration. Hazael chose ambition and cruelty and built an earthly throne that will only testify against him in eternity. Jehoshaphat’s compromise in relationships opened a door that damaged generations. Israel and Judah’s repeated rejection of God led to suffering—yet even their discipline was God’s invitation to return.

Reflection: Deuteronomy 30 brings it into sharp focus: God sets before us “life and good, death and evil… blessing and curse,” and then pleads with us, “Therefore choose life.” Joshua echoes the same call: “Choose this day whom you will serve.”  You cannot control every circumstance on the “center stage” of your life, but you can control your response. You decide whom you will trust, how you will live, and whose voice you will follow. God’s hand is working behind the scenes—but He still calls you to make a clear, intentional choice.

Today, not someday, is the day of decision. Will you keep drifting with culture, compromise, and self-direction? Or will you draw a line in the sand like Joshua and say, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”?

Response: God stands ready with grace, forgiveness, and power for anyone who turns to Him. He doesn’t just invite you to avoid curses—He invites you into blessing, into life with Him. Your future, your family’s future, and your legacy are shaped by what you choose today. Choose His way. Choose life. Choose blessing.
