Saturday: Encouragement and Growth

Big Idea: Whatever your reason is for not being in a small group, it's bad.

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (ESV) 11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

A couple of weeks ago, I was having an excruciating day at the office. I’m not complaining, but sheesh……let’s just say there was alot going on.  And it was so overwhelming and discouraging.  Right after that long day, I showed up at church.  I saw some of my favorite people!  I heard some of my favorite worship music!  And I was reminded that even through the good times AND the bad times, I have MY PEOPLE!!  MY CHOSEN FAMILY.  The fellowship and encouragement of the local church is something that I don’t even have words to explain.  It’s just so good.  It’s amazing.  In this passage, Paul emphasizes the importance of encouragement among believers in Thessalonians. Building each other up in faith is a crucial function of Christ-centered community. Like a strong tree grows with the support of rich soil, individuals thrive in supportive and encouraging Christian fellowship.

Encouragement is fundamental to our spiritual growth. A small group can serve as fertile ground for encouragement to take root as members share their stories, victories, and struggles. I can’t tell you how many times a small group friend has picked me up when I’ve been fighting back tears of discouragement.  These interactions from brothers and sisters in Christ give great hope and incentive to face life’s challenges, pushing each other toward Christ-likeness.

Action Step: Send an encouraging message or note to a member of your small group or church to remind them of their value and importance in the faith community.
