Saturday: Forgiveness and Consequences: Navigating Sin's Aftermath

Daily Devotional for week of July 27, 2025

Day 6: Spiritual Growth and Dependence

BIG IDEA for the week: Even after you slay a giant in your life there will be another one waiting for you.

Passage: 1 Chronicles 21:1

"Then Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel."

New Testament Passage: James 4:6-8

"But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded."*

Devotional: Spiritual giants often appear as challenges to our faith.  Sometimes these giants are principalities pressing against us, like Paul describes in Ephesians 6.  Sometimes these giants come from the culture.  And sometimes these giants come from our own sin nature, such as pride or complacency. As with David, God sometimes allows these trials to help us grow and deepen our reliance on Him.  It’s important that we are on-guard at all times so that we don’t get knocked back or knocked down by Satan, by culture, or by our own fleshly desires (AKA our HOMER SPIRIT).

Reflection: Spend time considering the giants in your spiritual life. Can you identify their source?  Is it Satan and his agents pressing against you?  Is it the culture that has been infected by godless and secular thought?  Or is it your own issues?  Reflect on areas where pride or self-reliance have taken precedence over dependence on God. How can you foster a deeper trust and ongoing spiritual growth? Consider regular practices of humility and community engagement to fortify your spiritual journey, remembering that God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.
