Scripture: 1 Kings 19:9
"There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said to him, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?'"
God inquired of Elijah, but He already knew what was up. His question to Elijah is both a challenge and an invitation to reflection, prompting the prophet to re-evaluate his situation. This moment symbolizes a divine check-in, examining motive and position amid personal challenges. It suggests that amid our "I can't evens," God invites us to introspection, considering whether we are aligned with His will. These moments are good for us, even though it makes us want to punch a wall or kick a puppy.
If someone were to ask you today: “What are you doing here?” in regard to your own life, your location, your plans, and your actions, what would your answer be?
The question to Elijah of “what are you doing here?” highlights that God's presence involves prompting us towards self-realization and growth. It encourages us to ponder whether our current path serves His purposes. This reflection guides us towards understanding our circumstances truthfully, addressing misalignments, and recommitting to God’s call even during uncertainty.
Trust God in the I can't evens:
Jesus, through parables, invited reflection on spiritual truths, leading His followers to consider their paths. He also often answered questions with questions. The goal was for people to truly pay attention and listen to what they were saying about themselves externally and what they were believing about themselves internally The Holy Spirit beckons introspection in our spiritual journeys, cultivating awareness and depth through divine inquiry.
ACTION STEP: “What are you doing here?” Seriously though……”What are you in life right now?” Reflect on that question "What are you doing here?" in your practical every-day life and also your spiritual life. Journal your findings, noting areas where you may need realignment with God’s purpose.
Prayer: Lord, please give me clarity to understand Your plan and Your purpose for my life. Help me to walk in Your ways and not my own. And help me to be aware when I start trying to just do my own thing verses following You. Amen.
