Thursday: Draining the Swamp: Jehu’s Trap for Baal Worshipers

Key Idea: You can fight obvious idols and still serve more subtle ones.
Reading: 2 Kings 10:18–28. “Then Jehu assembled all the people and said to them, “Ahab served Baal a little, but Jehu will serve him much. Now therefore call to me all the prophets of Baal, all his worshipers and all his priests. Let none be missing, for I have a great sacrifice to offer to Baal. Whoever is missing shall not live.” But Jehu did it with cunning in order to destroy the worshipers of Baal. And Jehu ordered, “Sanctify a solemn assembly for Baal.” So they proclaimed it. And Jehu sent throughout all Israel, and all the worshipers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left who did not come. And they entered the house of Baal, and the house of Baal was filled from one end to the other. He said to him who was in charge of the wardrobe, “Bring out the vestments for all the worshipers of Baal.” So he brought out the vestments for them. Then Jehu went into the house of Baal with Jehonadab the son of Rechab, and he said to the worshipers of Baal, “Search, and see that there is no servant of the Lord here among you, but only the worshipers of Baal.” Then they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had stationed eighty men outside and said, “The man who allows any of those whom I give into your hands to escape shall forfeit his life.” So as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, Jehu said to the guard and to the officers, “Go in and strike them down; let not a man escape.” So when they put them to the sword, the guard and the officers cast them out and went into the inner room of the house of Baal, and they brought out the pillar that was in the house of Baal and burned it. And they demolished the pillar of Baal, and demolished the house of Baal, and made it a latrine to this day. Thus Jehu wiped out Baal from Israel.”
Devotional Thought: Jehu uses cunning against the worshipers of Baal. He announces that he will serve Baal even more than Ahab did and calls for every Baal prophet, priest, and worshiper to gather. He insists that no one be missing and sets up a massive, fake worship event. Once the temple is packed and only Baal worshipers are inside, Jehu gives the command: “Go in and strike them down; let not a man escape.” They slaughter the worshipers, tear down the pillar of Baal, demolish the temple, and turn its location into a public latrine. Jehu “wiped out Baal from Israel.” Outwardly, this looks like an incredible spiritual victory.
These verses depict a sweeping, visible purge of false worship. The house of Baal goes from being a place of honor to a heap of rubble under a city’s waste. God’s intolerance for idolatry is on full display. But this victory scene is not the whole story. The text will soon reveal that while Jehu eradicated Baal worship, he left other forms of idolatry untouched. It’s a vivid warning: you can aggressively attack some sins in your life and still harbor others; you can be passionate about cleaning up “big” public idols while secretly clinging to more acceptable or comfortable ones.
Reflection Questions:
Are there “obvious” sins you’re quick to condemn while ignoring more subtle idols in your own life—like comfort, control, or recognition?
What might God be calling you to tear down that you have so far only managed instead of destroyed?
Prayer: Lord, expose every idol in my life—both the obvious and the hidden. Give me courage to tear down anything that competes with You in my heart. May there be no area of my life where I say I worship You but still bow to something else. Amen.
