Thursday: Overcoming Evil with Good

Reading: Romans 12:20-21 “To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

2 Kings 6:21-23 ‭‭“As soon as the king of Israel saw them, he said to Elisha, “My father, shall I strike them down? Shall I strike them down?” He answered, “You shall not strike them down. Would you strike down those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master.” So he prepared for them a great feast, and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. And the Syrians did not come again on raids into the land of Israel.”

Devotional: Israel had every right to destroy their Syrian enemies. Justice demanded it. Strategy suggested it. But God commanded something radical: feed them. Show them grace. The result? Peace. This challenges everything in us. Our flesh screams for revenge, for justice, for getting even. But God's Spirit whispers a different way—the way of Jesus, who fed those who would betray Him and prayed for those who crucified Him.

When you respond to evil with good, you don't just change circumstances—you reveal Christ. You heap burning coals of conviction on your enemy's head, not to harm but to transform. The Syrians experienced something they couldn't explain: undeserved grace.

Reflection: Who is your "enemy" today? That difficult coworker? That family member who hurt you? God may be calling you to bless them.

Response: Do one specific act of kindness for someone who doesn't deserve it. Let your light shine.
