Thursday: Solomon's Power Lust

BIG IDEA: Distracted men produce a divided people

Scripture Reading: 1 Kings 10:19

"The throne had six steps, and the throne had a round top, and on each side of the seat were armrests and two lions standing beside the armrests."

Philippians 2:3-4

"Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others."

The description of Solomon’s throne demonstrates his grasp on power and the desire for exaltation. Significantly elevated, the throne is symbolic of Solomon’s status and authority, which he allowed to overwhelm his humility. Remember that the throne was six steps high. Six is the number of man. And by doing this, he is exalting man rather than exalting God. His desire for power evolved into an idol that shifted his focus from God’s command to servant leadership and instead promoted his self-image. Power and authority, when misaligned with God’s purpose, create division in our hearts and in those we lead.

As believers, we are called to practice humility and consider others above ourselves. But we are also to consider Jesus above all things and all people at all times. Jesus exemplified servant leadership, emphasizing that true greatness lies in serving others, not in elevating oneself. In examining our own lives, we should aim to lead by serving and uplifting those around us.

Action Step:

Identify a way to serve someone at work or in your community today. Practice humility by prioritizing their needs over your own.

Prayer:

Jesus, help me to lead with a servant heart, focusing on the needs of those around me. May my actions reflect Your love and humility in all that I do. Amen.
