Thursday: The Joy of Belonging

Big Idea: Whatever your reason is for not being in a small group, it's bad.

Scripture: Acts 2:42-47 (ESV) 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.  43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.  44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common.  45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.  46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,  47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

The early church in Acts exemplified what it means to live in true community. They held to the apostles’ teaching, shared meals of fellowship, and prayed together, forming a tight-knit community characterized by generosity, joy, and praise. Their commitment to one another and to God’s work resulted in growth and favor.  I don’t know about you, but that’s what I want.  And whether our friends and neighbors would admit it or not, deep down…..that is also what they want.  Everyone wants to belong.  Everyone wants to be part of something bigger.  Everyone is designed to find a connection to Someone beyond themselves.  And that Someone is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Being part of a small group today can replicate that sense of belonging and purpose. When we share life and faith with others, we experience the joy of both giving and receiving support and witnessing the transformation that occurs within ourselves and others. Community is a place where we can practice generosity and gratitude, reflecting the love of Christ to one another.

Action Step: Make a list of three things you can offer to your small group in the next couple of weeks as a way of blessing others and making God known in your community.
