Big Idea: Whatever your reason is for not being in a small group, it's bad.
Scripture: Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (ESV) 9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. 10 For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! 11 Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? 12 And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
Simply put……We are Better Together. We need each other. This scripture in Ecclesiastes (written by the wisest man to ever live) highlights the inherent value found in companionship and community. Two people can achieve more than one alone through collaboration and support. When challenges and trials come, having others to help can make all the difference in overcoming adversity. For those of you that have experienced this, you know just what I’m talking about. When we live in community, there are brothers and sisters in Christ that are there to pick us up when we are down. And in time, there will also come a time for us to return the favor and to pick up our brother or sister when they are down. The metaphor of the threefold cord illustrates the strength that unity brings, especially when God is at the center.
Being in a small group offers a source of strength and resilience. Sometimes after I’ve gathered with God’s people to pray and read Scripture, I feel like I can run through a brick wall! When we share life’s burdens and joys with others who are walking the same path, we build a network that can help us stand firm in our faith. God doesn’t intend for us to navigate life alone; instead, He calls us to be part of something bigger than ourselves.
Action Step: Reach out to someone you know who might need encouragement and offer to pray with them or for them today. And then….invite them to your small group!
