TUESDAY: When Duty Replaces Devotion

Reading:

Revelation 2:4

“But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.”

Luke 10:38-42

“Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Devotional:

Martha served Jesus faithfully, yet missed sitting at His feet. The Ephesian believers worked tirelessly for Christ but had drifted from loving Him passionately.

This is Christianity's subtle danger—replacing relationship with routine, substituting intimacy with industry. You can teach Sunday School, serve on committees, defend doctrine, and still have a heart growing distant from Jesus. Ministry becomes mechanical when love grows cold. Service without affection becomes exhausting rather than energizing.

Reflection:

Today, ask yourself: Am I serving Jesus or simply serving? Does my Christian activity flow from love or obligation?

Response:

The work matters, but Jesus wants your heart first. Mary chose what was better—time with Jesus Himself.
