FRIDAY: Mercy in the Ruins

Big Idea:

Remembering God for what He’s done and what He’s doing brings the blessing. Forgetting God brings the CRUMBLE.

Reading:

Lamentation 3:19-26

“Remember my affliction and my wanderings, the wormwood and the gall! My soul continually remembers it and is bowed down within me. But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.”

Ephesians 2:4-9

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Devotional:

Second Kings ends with an unexpected twist: mercy shown to an undeserving king. After all the rebellion, idolatry, and bloodshed, God ensures the book concludes with grace. This is our God—extending mercy when judgment seems deserved.

You may feel like you've failed too many times, wandered too far, or forgotten God too often. But the same God who showed mercy to Jehoiachin offers mercy to you today. Communion reminds us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. His mercy isn't based on your performance but His character.
