Responding Before It’s Too Late

Reading: 2 Kings 17:13-14 “Yet the Lord warned Israel and Judah by every prophet and every seer, saying, “Turn from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes, in accordance with all the Law that I commanded your fathers, and that I sent to you by my servants the prophets.” But they would not listen, but were stubborn, as their fathers had been, who did not believe in the Lord their God.”

Hebrews 3:7-15 “Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years. Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.’ As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’” Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.””

Devotional: Israel didn’t fall overnight. God “warned Israel and Judah by every prophet and every seer” (2 Kings 17:13), but they “stiffened their neck” and refused to listen. They saw the messages; they just left them “unread.” Eventually, judgment came—and by then, it was too late. The nation was shattered, the people scattered, their identity nearly erased.

Hebrews echoes the urgency: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” We assume we have time. Time to repent later. Time to get serious later. Time to forgive later. But God’s warnings are not open-ended. Delayed obedience can become permanent hardness.

Reflection Questions: What is God speaking to you about right now that you’ve been postponing? What would it look like to respond today instead of “someday”?

Response: Identify one thing you’ve been putting off spiritually (forgiving someone, confessing sin, reconciling, starting a spiritual discipline, ending something unhealthy). Do one decisive act today that moves you from delay to obedience.
