Reading:
2 Kings 19:30-31
30 And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward. 31 For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord will do this.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18
16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
Devotional:
After promising rescue from Assyria, God gives Judah a picture of slow, steady restoration: the land will produce enough to survive the first two years, and by the third year, they will plant, reap, and enjoy full harvest again. In other words, God isn’t just saving them from an army; He is rebuilding them as a people.
He calls them a remnant that will “take root downward and bear fruit upward.” Their survival and future fruitfulness are guaranteed—not by their strength, but by “the zeal of the Lord.”
In Christ, you are part of God’s remnant people—a people He preserves, grows, and uses for His glory. Your body may be weakening, your circumstances may be painful, but 2 Corinthians 4:16–18 reminds you that God is renewing your inner self day by day. Your current affliction is “light” and “momentary” compared to the eternal weight of glory being prepared for you.
The Great Physician doesn’t just heal moments; He restores lives, roots you deeply in Himself, and makes you fruitful in ways you may not see yet. Your story in Him is not ending in defeat—it’s moving toward eternal glory.
Reflection Question:
Where do you see God quietly “rooting” you deeper in Him, even through hardship, so that you can bear greater fruit later?
Response:
Turn your sorrow into joy today and thank Him for being with you and rooting you.
