Tuesday: More Than Going Through the Motions

Reading: Isaiah 29:13-16 “And the Lord said: “Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men, therefore, behold, I will again do wonderful things with this people, with wonder upon wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden.” Ah, you who hide deep from the Lord your counsel, whose deeds are in the dark, and who say, “Who sees us? Who knows us?” You turn things upside down! Shall the potter be regarded as the clay, that the thing made should say of its maker, “He did not make me”; or the thing formed say of him who formed it, “He has no understanding”?”

Matthew 15:8-9 ““This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.””

Devotional: God’s accusation against Israel cuts deep: “This people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me” (Isaiah 29:13). They had mastered religious activity while abandoning real relationship. Attendance, prayers, and rituals became substitutes for genuine devotion.

Jesus repeats this same indictment in Matthew 15. The issue isn’t that practices like church, prayer, and Bible reading are bad—they’re good. The problem is when they become empty motions instead of overflow from a heart that loves God.

God doesn’t want checkbox Christianity. He wants hearts that are truly His, and lives that reflect that love. When faith is just a cultural identity instead of a life-changing encounter with the living God, we’ve lost what matters most.

Reflection Questions: Are you going through spiritual motions or genuinely pursuing God?Where has your faith become more of a checklist than a love relationship?

Response: Take one habit you’ve been doing on autopilot (e.g., a quick prayer, a rushed Bible reading, Sunday attendance) and slow it down today. Before you do it, pray: “God, I don’t want to go through the motions. Meet me here.” Then do that practice slowly and intentionally.
